Thorold's Outdoor Aquatic Centre opened with a big splash last month. Following a grand opening ceremony with Mayor Henry D'Angela, Thorold city councillors and other dignitaries, swimmers eagerly entered the Richmond Street pool for the first time. "This is a great day for the City of Thorold," D'Angela said.
"Our outdoor aquatic centre is unlike any in the Niagara region and were pleased and proud it's a facility that can be enjoyed by all Thorold residents."
The centre was constructed at a cost of $3.87 million, which included a $200,000 Investing in Ontario grant from the province, and was offset by $856,000 in city development charges.
"This is a great example of how a council and the community can make a positive change for our community," D'Angela said. "We have the makings of some great synergies and opportunities in Thorold."
The new pool, which replaces the McMillan Park Kiwanis pool built in 1948 at a cost of $45,000, has a capacity for 352 swimmers.
The new facility features wheelchair accessibility and zero-grade entries for people with mobility limitations. The pool also features water and energy conservation features, family change rooms, sun shades, a splash pad, water slide and heated water.
Thorold resident Richard DelBen was excited about the pool opening.
"When my grandchildren come over, we can just come across the street now," he said.
