Everyone should be able to work without fear of violence or harassment in the workplace. That's why Ontario passed legislation to strengthen protection for workers from workplace violence and to address workplace harassment. The new amendments to our Occupational Health and Safety Act (the Act) go into effect June 15, 2010, and will apply to all workplaces under the Act.
To help in understanding the changes to the Act, and to support employer compliance, the Ministry of Labour and our Health and Safety system partners are now developing a series of user friendly materials. These materials will include a plain language guide to the legislation, a guide to assist in developing policies and programs , including templates, as well as fact sheets, and tools for conducting assessments of risks of violence.
Please check our web site regularly for the most up to date information and resources: www.labour.gov.on.ca. The fact sheet on workplace violence and harassment is now online and more materials and tools will be available before the legislation comes into force.
I encourage you to use these resources as you take the necessary steps to ensure your workplaces are in compliance with the requirements and to make the web link available across your workplace networks. If you would like more information about the ministry's workplace violence and harassment materials and tools, please contact Ann Misetich at 416-326-7635 or by email at ann.misetich@ontario.ca.
I look forward to continuing our work with you on making sure Ontario's workplaces are the healthiest and safest for all workers.
Sincerely,
Peter Fonseca
Minister
