The Cities of Thorold and St. Catharines are both participating in a public space recycling pilot program with Niagara Region, other local municipalities and Refreshments Canada. In an effort to increase Niagara's waste diversion rate, the Region, the municipalities of Thorold, Wainfleet, Grimsby and St. Catharines and Refreshments Canada have teamed up to launch "Niagara Recycles...on the go!"
In St. Catharines, Bill Burgoyne and Merritton arenas are pilot sites and were outfitted with recycling containers late in the winter. The pilot continued in St. Catharines as the hockey season ended and lacrosse season began.
In Thorold, the pilot is focused on four parks: Battle of Beaverdams, C.E. Grosse, Sullivan and South Confederation. Recycling bins for plastic, glass and aluminum beverage containers are expected to be in place in the parks by early June. Other municipalities are testing downtown and beach recycling.
Blue public space recycling bins accept all empty plastic, glass and aluminum beverage containers, but not paper coffee cups. Bins are marked with visual clues to help you recycle the right item. You're encouraged to keep up the good work you've demonstrated at home when youre out and about!
The pilot will play a key role in helping to identify the most effective ways for the Niagara Region to provide opportunities for recycling in public areas long term.
